Stanley Kubrick: what to see at the exhibition in Trieste

The exhibition, curated by Sean Corcoran and Donald Albrecht, is a tribute to Kubrick’s exceptional experience as a photojournalist before his dazzling career in film.

The photographic itinerary features 130 photographs testifying to the early work of the future director, who at the age of just 17 became a contributor to Look Magazine, a famous New York magazine.

The snapshots taken between 1945 and 1950 describe the reality of America and the city of New York according to the photographer’s vision and skilful storytelling skills, restoring the atmospheres, people and details of a historical era in turmoil. These photographs represent the prelude to a talent that he would later use in cinema for masterpieces such as Paths of Glory, Lolita, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Dr Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut.

The exhibition is organised by ERPAC in collaboration with the Museum of the City of New York and the Stanley Kubrick Archive.

Rooms sterilised against coronavirus with ozone

Because of the emergency of today, all our rooms are sterilized.

In this very careful moment, we want to remind to all of our guests that the environments of the literary hotel in Trieste are submitted to a sanitization system by means of the effective oxidizing action of ozone.

After the usual straight cleaning of the room, we have now enhanced the sanitization system with the use of specific disinfectants. The ozone machine is placed in the room and works for 15 minutes. As trivalent oxygen, the ozone – a gas that is already present in nature (for example, it is released during thunderstorms) – acts on each and every surrounded surface in contact with the air. Ozone inactivates bacteria and viruses, destroys mites, insects, bacteria, spores and molds in an absolutely natural, ecological and safe way. Nobody can enter the room while ozone is released from the machine, as it is harmful to humans and to life in general.

However, oxygen is then restored to the environment through 15 minutes by the releasing of it by means of the machine.

This guarantee of hygiene means that each and every guest can be considered tp be the first to live in that room, no residue nor any kind of bacteria, nor living thing can in fact resist the disinfectant action of the ozone.

Ozone has been declared as a safe agent by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In Italy it has been used for several years for the sanitization of surgical rooms.

This is the maximum guarantee of hygiene and safety that we can offer you, a weel-being that business travelers do deserve. And it is true option that makes your holiday even more pleasant and safe.

Furthermore, if it is true that high temperatures inhibit the dreaded virus, then the perfect pendant of a sterilized room is the sauna in our private SPA. Only for you, two unforgettable hours of “personal sterilization” with the hot hammam steam or the scorching Finnish temperatures.

Valentine’s Day in Italy: the romantic walks of Trieste

Among all the walks in and around Trieste, romantic itineraries are definitely those that have more emotions to give away.

The city, it is well known, has a special charm. Part of this charm is due to the sea. Its seafront, towards one of the most poetic and beautiful sunsets in the world, when in the clear days the sky is tinged with a thousand shades of red, is a particularly evocative place.

If among the dreams in the drawer you have “organize romantic holidays in Italy”, then do not miss this guide to the romantic excursions of Trieste.

THE MOLO AUDACE (the Bold Pier 😉

The favorite walk by lovers is in fact on the Molo Audace, the mighty quay which takes its name from the first Italian ship landed in Trieste thus sanctioning the passage of the city to Italy in 1918. The “Molo Audace” remains in the memory above all as a place consecrated with love.

At the beginning of the “Molo Audace”, millions of dates were given. Walk (maybe hand in hand) its 246 meters shows you the way to the Gulf, how to get the bottom of it and feel the real essence of the sea. It makes you feel like you are never alone when you turn and admire “Piazza Unità”,with all the banks and the “Carso” dotted with lights. It is the elegant gateway to an enveloping and spiritual feeling.

THE CASTLE OF MIRAMARE

The second destination full of languid and never-ending romanticism is the walk from Barcola to the Castle of Miramare. As for the other excursions to Trieste, the recommended time is obviously by the sunset. And above all it is wonderful if you want a longer walk.

To the people of Trieste, the Castle of Miramare immediately evokes the tragic story of Maximilian and Charlotte of Hapsburg. Every room, every wall and every piece of furniture tells the dreams of the two young lovers, as well as their sad destiny.

Trieste, just like Verona, has its tragic and passionate love story to tell. Certainly less known, but not less rich of mysterious intrigues.

Massimiliano and Carlotta of Austria, in love and married for their true love, and not only for family designs, choose Trieste as the place to establish their home and have the mythical white turreted castle built. The idyll, however, breaks up when Massimiliano agrees to become the emperor of Mexico, ending up facing an entire country rising against him.

With the end of Massimiliano, also the dream of love with the beautiful Carlotta comes to an end. She who followed him until late in Mexico, had to return to Europe: the situation was now too dangerous. He seemed to foresee the fate of her husband on his return to Miramare: he began to show signs of imbalance. Therefore for some time he was also kept under close observation within the green park of the castle. After the tragic death of her husband, Carlotta only remained to give herself to madness.

In 1867 Massimiliano was captured and shot at only 34 years of age. In the same period of time a lady in the company of Carlotta, Amalia Stöger, was sadly found hanged in a room of the castle with 8 rounds of lace around the neck.

There were Immediately lots of rumors about the mad love of Amalia for Maximilian, and the discovery of some letters sent by him would prove the existence of this triangle love. Even more disturbing was the hypothesis that Amalia was tormented by remorse for giving poison to Carlotta  that undermined her reason. There was talk of “poison of the Vaudoux”, a particular drug completely tasteless capable of progressively psyche breaking down. Hence the tragedy of a love spoiled by betrayal and undermined by revenge.

DUINO CASTLE

On the other hand, we can speak of sublime poetry if the Duino Castle, nearby Sistiana, is chosen as a romantic destination. The small village overlooking the sea, the castle gardens meticulously cared for and the view that is enjoyed from the cliff overlooking the castle, are the magical potion of sweet romance.

Not surprisingly, Rainer Maria Rilke, considered one of the greatest German-speaking poets for the lyrical intensity of his compositions, here he began writing the ELEGIE DUINESI, which he dedicated to his beloved princess and celebrated patron Marie von Thurn und Taxis. The castle in fact hosted over time many artists such as Johann Strauss, Franz Liszt, Mark Twain and Gabriele D’Annunzio. Marie was a dazzling beauty that certainly must not have left Rilke indifferent.

Where to spend Valentine’s Day and romantic breaks?

Trieste is certainly a romantic destination suitable for a Valentine’s Day. We at the Literary Hotel have dedicated to Central European Romanticism and to the month of lovers the vey proposal to make it even more magical according to our recipe based on relax, romance and a private spa.

“Real adventures, I reflected, do not happen to people who remain at home:

they must be sought abroad.”

Barcolana 50+1: AN OCEAN OF STORIES

From the 2nd to the 13th of October, the day of the regatta, Trieste is immersed in the great festival of the sea

If the 50th Barcolana brought Trieste back into the Book of Guinness World Records with the largest or the most participated regatta in the world (almost three thousand boats present in the Gulf), the 51st Barcolana will also be dedicated to the environment and books, with 11 consecutive days of festivities!

From this year, not only the Rive, where all sailing boats traditionally dock, will be the place of the party, but also the Piazza Unità d’Italia as itself, symbol of Trieste, or the largest square in the world on the sea will become the fulcrum of food and wine and exhibition event.

Among the big sailors who will be present for the occasion is the British ocean sailor Dee Caffari, who will be the testimonial and the ambassador of the protection of the seas from the plastics as well. With her, also the Argentinian Santiago Lange, gold medalist at the Rio Olympics and the Chinese sailor Vicky Song (坤), the first in her country who has taken part of a sailing trip around the world.

In the week from the 2nd to the 6th of October, spotlights will focus on the Castle of San Giusto with the Barcolana Books, or “An ocean of of stories”, a literary appointment in the most literary city of Italy, marked by the meeting with the authors to talk about the sea and travel from the top of an inimitable location like the “Bastione Rotondo” that dominates the entire Gulf. All the program of Barcolana UN MARE DI RACCONTI (an ocean of stories) can be read here.

It is impossible to forget, among the many challenges that will precede the race, the spectacular Barcolana Classic, a regatta dedicated to vintage wooden hulls, to be held on Saturday the 12th of October, and always on the eve of the main competition, the Barcolana by Night, which will reveal the most creative sailing veils under the moonlight.

Barcolana 51 also wants to look to up to the future by hosting the first “foiling” motorboat, that is capable of flying over water with a lot of crew, as well as a virtual sailing tournament, called e-sailing, which simulates a race thanks to the new generation software.

Guests of the Victoria Literary Hotel will find the complete calendar of the events of these 11 days of celebration in their rooms.

Not only that, the literary hotel is keen to leave a good memory of this first Barcolana in the name of books, by honoring the guests with a kind surprise to their readings and signed by Trieste’s artist Ugo Pierri.

Instead on the environmental front, those who will stay during the days of the regatta will benefit from a tribute fruit of a very felt recycling operation because it concerns our lady Bora, our beloved wind, able to reap dozens and dozens of umbrellas when she comes to visit us. This is what happens to the umbrellas that Victoria puts at her guests’ disposal. This year, however, we have reused the plastic canvas of the broken umbrellas by Bora to make comfortable suitcases for shoes or clothes.

Anyone who may wish to be part of the regatta on a sailboat or from the top of a helicopter will find here all the possibilities to live this unique experience.

However, all those who have already been our guests can request a special rate, by contacting the Front Desk directly at +39 040 3624145 or by writing to info@hotelvictoriatrieste.com

TRIESTE LOVES BIKE

The itineraries available to those who love two wheels

Today, bicycle is the new frontier of sustainable travel, and Trieste is the perfect cultural pathway within the dense network of cycle routes that descends from Mitteleurope. Or those that, crossing from East and West, connect the Danubian area to Mediterranean Europe. The elimination of borders has transformed the old smuggling routes of the Trieste Karst into a web of enjoyable and unblelievable cycle paths.

Today those tracks have been connected to each other on order to create real itineraries. Here they are:

La via della Salvia

Arriving from outside Trieste, it is worth trying the 51 km pathway from Monfalcone to Muggia, a discreet ride in the mileage, but not difficult. And certainly very suggestive. It is the Via della Salvia, which actually connects to the AdriaBike (Fvg2) cycle route from the Tricorno’s in Slovenia to the Parenzana’s in Croatia.

Starting from the back of Monfalcone’s port you cross the Foce del Timavo, Villaggio del Pescatore, Duino, Sistiana, you take the panoramic Weiss path, better known as Sentiero della Salvia, overlooking the sea, then take via del Pucino with its precious vineyards and outstanding view of the entire gulf.

Getting off Miramare, once you arrive by the coast of Barcola, you may take then the shortcut to the Old Port until you reach Piazza Unità in the heart of Trieste.

It is now time for a little stop to enjoy the finest tour of the city center. Afterwards you may take the Cottur pedestrian path in San Giacomo and arrive in Val Rosandra, then to the Noghere, Rio Ospo and finally to Muggia.

In 3 and a half hours, including the Trieste’s quick stop, the excursion is completed.

The Cottur’s track

From the Trieste sea to the Slovenian woods, the Cottur pedestrian path passes by Trieste-Kozina-Lokev-Lipiza-Trieste: a little less than 50 kilometers with a total height difference of about 700 meters. It starts and finishes on the legendary cycle path dedicated to Giordano Cottur. A very fascinating ride, which at least up to Kozina it could be easier with an electric pedal assisted bicycle as the beginning is slightly uphill, first among the houses and then in the woods above the Val Rosandra. Through old railway tolls and tunnels that light up as cyclists are passing by, you cross the border with Slovenia and arrive, after about 17 kilometers, at 465 meters above the sea level in Kozina.

Continue towards Divaccia, passing by Rodik and Kacice Pared, then turn left in front of Gostilna Godina to take the path that leads straight to Lokev and then, on asphalt, to Lipiza.

Here, after running along the golf course, proceed to Basovizza by taking the Ressel path on the right, turn left at the junction with the white road. After 2 km you pass the town center and follow the signs to the Foiba.

There is a long ride on the Provincial Road 11 to Sant’Antonio in Bosco where you may return to the Cottur’s path. And almost without touching the pedals you will return to the starting point.

Parenzana’s track

This cycle path follows the ancient Austrian route that connected two seaside towns, Porec and Trieste, via railway along the heart of Istria.

The original route of the Parenzana’s, the one that was slowly followed by the narrow gauge train from Trieste to Porec, is currently usable starting from the mouth of the Ospo’s river, almost 2 km from the center of Muggia. The advice is to start from there, reaching Muggia with the Delfino Verde’s boat from the shores of Trieste.

The Istrian countryside will welcome you with its charm of medieval villages, vineyards and olive groves, and rolling hills that end in the Adriatic sea.

Istrianissima

Every year by the end of April there is the much-loved Istrian cycle event, starting from the beautiful Grožnjan (Grožnjan).

The magnificent Istrian hinterland is crossed for a day by a huge number of old bicycles, and cyclists with the old clothing of that time, to recall the exploits of the champions of the past and their bikes steel made.

Moreover in Trieste there is the possibility to visit the one museum of the very old bikes, with extremely rare specimens collected and cataloged by Franco Bortolussi of the Società Ciclistica Gino Bartali. Ask the front desk to arrange a visit to this magnificent private museum.

And if you don’t have a bike, but you want to pedal, there is no problem. We will take care of providing you our bikes, helmets and expert guides.

Trieste: an Easter full of Stars

Hollywood lands at the Castle of Miramare

Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson in Trieste from the 17th to the 28th of April for THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD.

The city of Trieste announces an Easter full of stars, from 17th to 28th April it will be possible to meet in the streets of the Italian city the Hollywood that includes Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson (to whom we may add Morgan Freeman). These absolute masters of international big rooms are here for the filming of THE HITMAN’S WIFE BODYGUARD, which is the sequel to the 2017 film which has grossed $ 180 million worldwide.

Trieste is a very popular location for directors, but it has always remained mostly anonymous. Only recently, with the Rai TV series LA PORTA ROSSA, the city has become an awesome scenario, thanks to its unusual beauty and the foresight of authors such as Carlo Lucarelli and Giampiero Rigosi. And now, whole world will recall its name, so the takes shot in Trieste may be anticipated by the TRIESTE – ITALY indication on the screen, in perfect James Bond style.

Shooting has already begun in London, then they will move to Croatia, to end up in Trieste. In fact, on April the 17th, 23rd and 24th the troupe will be based at Miramare’s Castle, which will remain closed on those days for the outdoor takes, but in the meanwhile, the indoor takes will be those of the Palazzo della Prefettura in Piazza Unità. In fact, on April the 17th you will have the opportunity to meet the crew in the city center as well. But also on April the 25th they’re back at the Prefettura. On April the 26th it will be the turn of the Old Port, and the next days again in Piazza Unità until the 28th, with a night scene in the “Palazzo di Vetro” (Palace of Glass) of the Municipality in Largo Granatieri.

So why not taking an eye on a live filming set full of international stars? This is a unique opportunity. Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest square in the world facing the sea, together with the magic of a true Hollywood set all in one time. It is certainly a good reason not to miss anything of it.

On the one hand Miramare’s Castle will be closed for three days and the staff at the Front Desk of the Hotel Letterario will work to advise you on the best solutions to make your stay memorable and unique. And as in Trieste we are very fortunate to have not only one, but 3 castles to be seen, it will be possible to visit the Castle of San Giusto and the Castle of Duino beloved by Rilke, in the days when the Castle of Miramare will be the Hollywood scenario.

Alternatively, we suggest a trip on the CARSO area to discover its huge caves such as the Grotta Gigante or the Torri di Slivia, and the delicacies that are eaten in the Osmize, places that are only found on the CARSO across the area of Trieste. As of imperial origins, unique experiences may give you the access to private homes and consume what they produce, from cold cuts, to wines and fresh vegetables.

Rely on us, and as always, we will do our very best to make your stay one of the most beautiful memories ever.

THE JOY’CE ART celebrates 10 years of Victoria with the portraits of James Joyce

The literary hotel has just turned 10 years of hospitality. On Saturday December 15th we celebrated our first decade of life with books and art. A joy that is always under the banner of our tutelary deity: James Joyce.

The presentation of SCIARADE, the book by Franco Ferranti accompanied by unpublished portraits of the great Triestine painter Ugo Pierri – still available in the hotel’s reading room – inaugurated the evening which continued with the cake and a toast.

And the gift? As in any proper celebration, the gift was not lacking. And we want to share it with our Guests. We transformed the conference room into a temporary gallery for all the Christmas break and until January. The exhibition is about the portraits of James Joyce created by the irreverent painter from Trieste, Ugo Pierri.

Who Ugo Pierri is?

Simply the greatest living painter of Trieste. Born in 1937, he trained at the school of Anita Pittoni. Deeply rooted in his city, of which he sums up all the facets, he can boast many personal exhibitions, poems and stories collections, illustrations and pictorial works.

As if to remember his marvelous novel Portrait of the artist as a young man, Pierri offers us a series of (true) portraits of the artist in his mature age.

Our wish is that as many Guests as possible can enjoy this exhibition, able to highlight James Joyce from different points of view. Each portrait, in fact, highlights a particular of its multifaceted personality.

Spring in Trieste between the Karst and Osmiza What do Triestinos do in Spring?

What do Triestinos do in Spring?

Spring, as we know, is the happiest time of the year, and Spring in Trieste is certainly one of the most beautiful periods. The light, the warmth, the perfumes and the colours awaken the desire for open-air life, in the city as well as in the gentle heights of the Karst.

The Karst shines with a fresh green and blooms that invite long walks. After a cold winter, sometimes punctuated by the Bora, (the strong wind that is worth facing at least once in a lifetime) the outdoor tables of the many local restaurants return to life.

The Barcola promenade becomes again a destination not only for walks (from Bus number 6 in the Marina to the Castle of Miramare) but also for those eager for their first suntan.

Spring in Trieste is perfect for the romantic and for the lovers of nature. The Miramare Castle Park, with its hundreds of varieties of trees, is a wonderful labyrinth in which to get lost.

parco Castello di Miramare by Maurizio Fecchio

The Triestines come out of hibernation and repopulate their beloved Karst, which always hides new surprises even to those who know it well. The most fascinating destination is certainly the Giant Cave, which in 1995 earned its place in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world.

But the least known destination for outsiders are the Osmize, which become a second home at weekends.

vista mare da Osmiza di Contovello by @fillls

The Osmize are wine cellars in private houses where you can taste wines (not only) typical of the Trieste and Slovenian Karst plateau. The wines that are found in these cellars are usually the Vitoska and Malvasia (white) and the Terrano (red). In addition you can taste cheeses, salami, olives, eggs and home-made pickles. The Osmize are a meeting point to spend a few hours with your friends in an extremely convivial atmosphere.

cosa si mangia in Osmiza? by @jakegaudion

The peculiarity of the Osmize lies in the fact that it exists only in the province of Trieste (continuing partly along the Slovenian coast) and derives from an old tradition dating back to Charlemagne, but set during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which allowed producers of local wine to sell their products directly from their homes for a period of 8 days. It is no coincidence that the word Osmiza comes from osem, which means eight in Slovenian.

Vitoska o Malvasia? i vini delle osmize by DebbyTS

Today as then, the Osmize are signposted by a branch on the side of the road that points to it. Nowadays the Osmize are not governed by the traditional eight days; the fun lies in losing oneself in the Karst, without knowing where to go, and in discovering new Osmize to visit.

Some are very special, facing the sea on the ridge overlooking the Gulf: the view goes beyond the horizon and on a clear day you can see the Croatian coast up to Punta Salvore.

osmiza vista mare fiorita by @pl_izzie

Some are surrounded by greenery or in the middle of vineyards or olive groves. A particular pleasure is meeting the real people, the locals: families, groups of young and elderly people who live this ritual with simplicity and the desire to sing and be together typical of these convivial spaces. Nowadays there is a website to find out which Osmizas are open, but our advice is to follow your nose – lose yourself on the plateau in an Osmiza hunt. And your spring in Trieste will be coloured with flavours.

formaggi, salumi, olive, uova e sottaceti di produzione propria by @atteloivd

For more refined palates there are some excellent wine cellars that can be visited by appointment. Among the many, we recommend Kante, Zidarich, Lupinc, Bajta, Parovel or Skerk.

Once you arrive in Trieste and at the Victoria Hotel Letterario we will help you find the Osmiza or the wine cellar that suits you – just ask at the front desk.
